Get a cotton swab and dip it in nail polish remover then use it to scrub the surface of a stone that you believe has been dyed. Most of the dyes used to color tumbled stones are soluble in nail polish remover. Nail Polish Remover Test: Before you begin, know that this is a destructive test. You can also break a stone, scratch through its surface or touch it against a grinding wheel to see if the interior is undyed. If these stones are scratched, chipped or scraped, an undyed interior is usually revealed. This gives dyed stones a brightly colored surface without deep penetration. This is because most dyes are only able to penetrate a short distance into the stone. Shallow Penetration: The dye is always applied after the stones have been tumbled and polished. The dye color is much darker in these areas, while at the same time it is much lighter on smooth and flat parts of the stone. Dye accumulates in fractures, pits and areas of low relief. People who are interested in rocks, gems and minerals will recognize these dyed stones immediately.ĭye Accumulates in Fractures and Pits: The use of dye can also be detected by closely examining the surface of the stones. Many of them are dyed an outrageous color that is almost never seen in nature. Outrageous Colors: Most tumbled stones that have been dyed are very easy to recognize. Other people strongly object to dyed stones because they want their tumbled stones to have natural color. Most people accept dyed stones, as long as the dye treatment is permanent and will not stain their hands, clothing and possessions. These fracture serve as channels for the dyed solution to penetrate. Sometimes hot stones are dropped into cold solutions because the sudden temperature change will cause fractures to propagate through the stone. The heating causes the stone to expand and any pores or fractures are more easily penetrated. Sometimes stones are heated in a dye solution. Howlite, magnesite and feldspart minerals are also commonly dyed. Some varieties of common opal are porous and commonly dyed. Agate is one of the most commonly dyed stones because it is porous. Some types of tumbled stones are porous and a dyed liquid can easily penetrate the stone to impart color. Lapidaries (people who work with gem materials and ornamental stones) have used a wide variety of methods to change the color of stones for thousands of years. The stones selected for dye treatment are usually nice in every way - they simply have a color that is plain, weak, or uninteresting. Sometimes they are dyed for a special event or project. The purpose of the color alteration is usually to increase their visual appeal and marketability. If you see tumbled stones with outrageous colors, those stones have probably been dyed.
